At TU Incubator, we walk our talk, particularly when it comes to lean startup methods. If something programmatic isn't working quite right, we listen to the data, discuss potential switching costs, re-calibrate, and try something else.

“A [person] can fail many times, but [s/he] is not a failure until [s/he] blames someone else.” — John Burroughs, naturalist

In December 2016, we had been bumping along with a meetup entitled Baltimore Teacherpreneurs. It was a good concept, one we ran for about eight months, but we never really got the kind of attendance from innovative teachers that we wanted. When we assessed which path to take, we realized that we were the largest cluster of edtech companies in Greater Baltimore if not Maryland and that our main stakeholder was an education entrepreneur. So, we repositioned and rebranded to Baltimore EdTech, a name that authentically suits, that further depicts the coalescing of a robust edtech cluster.

The topic of our February Baltimore EdTech meeting is confronting failure, the inevitable, iterative point where you recognize defeat, dust yourself off, listen to the metrics, apply corrective action and keep moving. Sometimes, you just walk away with a write off.

My goal will be to start off a fairly humbling discussion centered on my experiences as an edtech investor. There have been four write-offs in my fifteen year journey investing in education, each with its own flavor of relevant takeaway.

So, come on out to the Towson Greene Turtle (408 York Road) at 5.30pm on Thursday, February 23. It promises to be an engaging, perhaps heartfelt conversation, and the first round of appetizers is on me.
